Bynum’s Medicare for All Plan Means Higher Taxes for Working-Class Oregonians

SISTERS, OR—Today, Deschutes County Commissioner and candidate for Oregon’s 5th Congressional District, Patti Adair, sharply criticized Congresswoman Janelle Bynum for her enthusiastic endorsement of yet another tax hike on working-class Oregonians. Commissioner Adair stated the following:
“After supporting the largest tax increase in American history and opposing eliminating taxes on tips, overtime, and Social Security, it’s no surprise Janelle Bynum is now backing yet another massive tax hike on working-class Oregonians. Make no mistake: That is what she did by following the most extreme wing of her party and supporting Medicare for All.
“Independent estimates put the cost of such a program at more than $30 trillion over ten years, which would require a new tax of more than 20 cents on every dollar you earn. To borrow from The Washington Post editorial board, Medicare for All means higher taxes for all, including working-class Oregonians.
“Oregonians are already stretched by the cost of groceries, gas, and housing. The last thing they need is a massive new tax on every paycheck and the loss of the health plan they have today. I’ll work with Democrats, Republicans, and anyone in between to bring down health care costs, but I won’t support a government takeover that asks working families in Oregon to hand a fifth of their paycheck to Washington.”
